Chen (Joseph) Sun

I am a postdoc at University of Waterloo where I work with Prof. Amir Khajepour ( Mechatronic Vehicle Systems Lab). I led efforts on the WATonoBus project at MVS Lab working on software and algorithmic development of decision-making and safety monitoring modules required for Canada's first autonomous shuttle bus approved via the ministry's autonomous vehicle pilot.

My research interest is in the broad disciplines related to robotics and autonomous driving, particularly in uncertainty quantification, safe planning and embodied AI.

I received my Ph.D. from University of Waterloo where I was advised by Professor Amir Khajepour and Professor Dongpu Cao at Mechatronic Vehicle Systems Lab and CogDrive Lab. I received my M.A.Sc degree in ECE from University of Toronto, Canada. I received a B.E. from University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. I previously worked/interned at Xylem(Robotics Research) and Bell Canada.

Research Highlights

I am broadly interested in trustworthy autonomy for a broad range of high-integrity applications that seamlessly interact with humans in daily activities. My current research highlights the following perspectives:

  • Uncertainty Quantification for perception modules and complex learning-based systems.
  • Safe Planning interacting in dynamic environment considering social norms.
  • Fault Diagnosis and Prognosis with model-data hybrid systems under uncertaintiies.
